Worcester Bars Face Midnight Confusion Over New Drink Rules
Worcester, Massachusetts, USATue Jun 16 2026
A recent change in Worcester’s drinking laws let bars serve alcohol until 3 a. m. on the weekend of June 12‑14, but the same extension did not cover music or TV. Because entertainment licenses stayed unchanged, every venue had to shut off all screens and games at 2 a. m. The result was a confusing mix of people still enjoying drinks while the bars were otherwise silent.
The city’s License Commission voted on June 11 to extend last‑call hours until July 31. A separate meeting on June 18 will decide whether to also extend entertainment hours. In the meantime, owners like Stacey Blanchette of Dirt McGirt’s were told by police that the earlier email about 3‑a. m. entertainment was an error, leaving her and other managers wondering why the rules were split.
At 1885 on Green St. , lights stayed on after 2 a. m. while the TV and music were turned off, leaving patrons who had just danced to wonder what was happening. Bartenders quickly explained that the bar was still open for drinks, but many guests chose to leave anyway. The confusion highlighted how a single change in the law can create unintended gaps.
The temporary last‑call extension was part of a broader effort to let communities celebrate the FIFA World Cup and the 250th anniversary of American independence. Three matches began at midnight on Sunday, June 13, and ran past 2 a. m. Without an entertainment extension, venues would have to cut World Cup broadcasts early, reducing the experience for fans.
The License Commission normally meets every two weeks. A special session earlier this week approved a one‑day liquor license for the June 23 World Cup watch party on Worcester Common, and later added the entertainment‑license vote to its agenda.
The city has not yet responded to requests for comment. For now, bar owners and patrons alike are left to navigate the new rules as they plan future events.
