World Bank steps up support for nations struggling after Middle East conflict

The World Bank is preparing to release up to $100 billion over the next fifteen months to help countries affected by the war in the Middle East. This amount could exceed the $70 billion it provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ajay Banga, the bank’s president, shared these plans during discussions at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank’s spring meetings. The funds would come in stages: $20 to $25 billion could arrive soon through a special crisis window, while another $30 to $40 billion might come from adjusting existing programs within six months. If the situation worsens, the bank may need to use extra financial space to meet the full amount. The war’s impact on energy prices and global growth is already clear. The IMF recently lowered its expectations for worldwide economic growth because of rising energy costs caused by the conflict. Without the war, global growth might have been slightly higher. If the fighting continues, the economic slowdown could deepen, especially for developing nations already dealing with debt and inflation.
Banga emphasized the need for flexible responses. He mentioned creating different levels of support depending on how long the conflict lasts. Even if the war ended soon, energy markets would take time to stabilize. Kristalina Georgieva from the IMF agreed, warning that a longer conflict would make recovery much harder. She also highlighted that countries already struggling with high energy prices need targeted help, not broad subsidies that could worsen inflation. Both leaders stressed caution. They advised governments to focus on short-term solutions rather than large, permanent measures that could strain budgets and fuel price increases. The IMF is already in talks with affected countries to understand their financial needs and provide support where necessary.
