Writers and Politics: When Art Meets Activism
LondonThu Nov 27 2025
Sally Rooney, a popular Irish writer, has spoken out about a new law in the UK. This law bans a group called Palestine Action. The UK government says this group is a terrorist organization. Rooney supports this group. She thinks this law might cause problems for her work.
Rooney said that a company making TV shows from her books is worried. They think paying her money for her books could be against the law. This is because she wants to use that money to help Palestine Action. Her book publishers might also have to stop paying her. This could mean her books are no longer sold in the UK.
Rooney thinks this is a big problem. She says it is not right for the government to control what people can write or read. She believes this law stops people from expressing their ideas freely.
Since the ban, many people have been arrested. They were holding signs that say they support Palestine Action. The police say more than 2, 000 people have been arrested. Over 100 of them were arrested just outside the court where Rooney's case is being heard.
This is a big deal. It shows how laws can affect not just activists, but also artists and writers. It makes people think about where to draw the line between safety and freedom.
