Wyoming's First Human Bird Flu Case: What You Need to Know
Wyoming, USASun Feb 16 2025
Wyoming has seen its first human case of bird flu. The patient is an older woman from Platte County. She is currently in a hospital out of state. This is the third hospitalization in the United States related to H5N1. The state health officer, Dr. Alexia Harrist, says there is no need for widespread alarm. The woman had underlying health issues and was likely exposed to the virus through contact with infected poultry at her home. The virus has been around for years, infecting various animals in Wyoming, including wild birds, mountain lion cubs, and even dairy cows. The Wyoming Department of Health has some advice to stay safe. They suggest avoiding raw milk and undercooked poultry. They also recommend staying away from sick or dead birds. If you spot any, report them to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The virus spreads through bird saliva, mucus, and feces. Humans can get infected if the virus enters their eyes, nose, or mouth. Symptoms in humans can range from mild to severe, including pneumonia. The department is keeping a close eye on the situation and working with experts to monitor it.
