Xabi Alonso Takes the Helm at Chelsea
London, UKSun May 17 2026
Xabi Alonso will start as Chelsea’s new manager on 1 July, signing a four‑year contract to replace Liam Rosenior.
The 44‑year‑old Spanish coach returns to English football after a brief stint at Real Madrid, where he left in January.
Chelsea’s current season has been rough; the team sits ninth in the Premier League with two games left and lost the FA Cup final 1‑0 to Manchester City under interim boss Calum McFarlane.
Alonso’s coaching résumé includes a Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, and his experience as a former Liverpool player adds depth to his profile.
During talks with the club’s owners and sporting directors, Alonso expressed pride in joining a globally recognised team and shared his vision of building a squad that competes consistently for top trophies.
The club’s statement highlighted Alonso’s broad experience, leadership qualities and integrity as key reasons for his appointment.
Chelsea also considered other managers such as Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth and Marco Silva of Fulham, but ultimately chose Alonso to steer the club into a new era.
Under the BlueCo ownership model, Alonso will serve as manager rather than head coach, signalling a shift in authority and influence compared to previous appointments.
The club’s transfer strategy will involve multiple sporting directors, but Alonso and the ownership group plan to play an active role in the upcoming summer window.
Alonso’s first official match is expected on 28 July against Western Sydney Wanderers, followed by friendlies in Australia and Hong Kong before the season starts.
