Yemen's Ports Under Fire: Israel's Recent Airstrikes
Hodeidah Governorate, YemenMon May 12 2025
The Houthi Interior Ministry reported that Israel launched air strikes on Yemen's Hodeidah governorate. This attack happened late on Sunday. It followed a warning from the Israeli army. They had told people to leave three Houthi-controlled ports in the area.
This was not the first time Israel and the Houthis have exchanged fire. Earlier in the month, Israel retaliated after a Houthi attack near Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The strikes hit the Hodeidah port and other parts of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. This included the main international airport there.
The Houthis have been launching missiles at Israel. They have also targeted Israeli ships in the Red Sea. This has been going on for 19 months. The Houthis say they are doing this to support Palestinians. They have been under heavy fire since the war in Gaza started.
Israel's attacks on Gaza have been brutal. More than 52, 000 people have died. This includes 57 who starved to death. This is due to Israel's total siege since March 2. This is according to Palestinian officials.
There was a ceasefire deal between Yemen's Houthis and the United States. It does not stop the Houthis from attacking Israel. The Houthis stopped firing on Israel during the Gaza ceasefire. They resumed when Israel imposed a harsh blockade. The war started again soon after.
The US military has been active in Yemen too. They have been launching daily air strikes for nearly two months. These strikes have destroyed infrastructure and killed many people. This includes children and civilians.
The conflict in Yemen is complex. It involves many players and has many layers. The recent strikes by Israel add another layer to this ongoing crisis. It is important to understand the broader context. This includes the war in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in Yemen.
