Yoga and Mental Health: A Fresh Look at the Evidence

Thu May 14 2026
Yoga has long been used for body and mind balance, but scientists are now checking how it helps with mental conditions. A recent review looked at studies from 2014 onward that were written in English and found over two thousand papers. After removing duplicates, the researchers read 77 full articles and kept 36 that fit their criteria. The selected studies covered a wide range of people: healthy adults, students, patients with mental illnesses, and special groups like pregnant women or single mothers. The review grouped the findings into five main ideas. First, yoga can lower feelings of depression, anxiety and everyday stress in many groups. Second, reviews of other studies also point to reduced worry after yoga sessions. Third, people with severe disorders such as schizophrenia or PTSD may see some relief when they practice yoga alongside usual care. Fourth, many participants reported an overall boost in how good they feel about life. Fifth, the research points to changes in brain chemistry and activity that might explain why yoga helps.
Across all the studies, people who practiced yoga reported fewer symptoms of stress and anxiety. Their mood scores improved and some brain scans showed better activity patterns. Even though the studies varied in size, length of practice and measurement tools, a clear trend emerged: yoga can support mental health. The review did not judge the quality of each study, so more rigorous research is still needed. Still, the evidence suggests that yoga could be a useful addition to traditional treatments for mental health problems.
