Yoga Helps Ease IBS Symptoms and Boost Well‑Being
IndiaThu May 14 2026
A new study tested whether a simple yoga routine could help people with irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. The researchers gave 202 adults between 18 and 45 a three‑month program of yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation. Half of the participants practiced yoga each week while the other half did not receive any special treatment.
The team measured how well the body’s nervous system worked before and after the program. They looked at heart rate, how fast it varied from beat to beat, and a test called the Valsalva maneuver that checks heart‑brain communication. They also asked participants to fill out a quality‑of‑life questionnaire that focuses on IBS symptoms.
Results showed the yoga group’s heart rate dropped and their heart‑rate variability improved. The ratio of low to high frequency in the variability also fell, indicating better balance between the body’s “fight or flight” and “rest and digest” systems. Their Valsalva ratio went up, showing stronger heart‑brain interaction.
When the researchers compared the quality‑of‑life scores, they found that those who did yoga reported feeling better overall. Their scores on the IBS‑QOL questionnaire were higher, meaning less pain and fewer worries about bowel habits.
These findings suggest that yoga can be a useful add‑on to standard IBS care. It helps the nervous system work more smoothly and makes people feel better in daily life. The study supports using yoga as a complementary therapy for those struggling with IBS.
