Yoga’s Role in Managing Spinal Health and Mental Well-being

Research shows that yoga might help people with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), a condition that affects the spine and causes stiffness and pain. In a study, patients who did an 8-week yoga program saw improvements in how their spine moved compared to those who did standard physiotherapy. The yoga group also reported better mental health, less fear of movement, and a stronger ability to manage their condition. Surprisingly, even healthy people who did yoga saw some benefits, though not as much as those with axSpA.
The study followed 76 participants over three years, comparing yoga with physiotherapy. While the yoga group’s spinal mobility improved, the physiotherapy group actually got worse in that area. Yoga also helped patients feel more in control of their health and reduced their anxiety about physical activity. Disease activity, which measures how active the condition is, also dropped slightly in the yoga group.
Experts suggest yoga could be a useful addition to treatment plans for axSpA. It’s not a cure, but it might help with both the physical and emotional sides of the disease. The study was officially recorded in Germany, adding credibility to its findings.
