Young Bostonians on the Move: What It Means for the Region

Greater Boston, USAWed Apr 22 2026
The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce has released a new study that shows many young adults are planning to leave the area. The survey, which asked 600 residents between ages 20 and 30 across five counties, found that about a quarter of respondents expect to move away in the next five years. This figure is almost unchanged from last year’s results, indicating a steady trend of out‑migration. Half of those who plan to depart are looking to stay within Massachusetts, with most choosing cities in the southeast or southwest parts of the state. A smaller group aims for other New England states, while a few are targeting locations outside the region entirely. The pattern suggests that people feel drawn to nearby communities rather than crossing state lines. Business leaders are sounding the alarm, urging lawmakers to adopt policies that keep young talent in Massachusetts. Key issues highlighted by respondents include job availability, high rent costs, safety concerns, and the difficulty of buying a home. They also call for better affordable housing options, accessible healthcare, and quality employment opportunities.
The study notes a decline in overall life satisfaction among young residents—down from 89% in 2023 to 79% this year—yet an increase in the sense that they can build community. Many participants expressed a strong interest in on‑the‑job training and career advancement, showing that professional growth is a major factor in their decision to stay or leave. A proposed ballot measure would lower the state income tax from 5% to 4% over three years. Supporters argue this could attract new residents and retain current ones, while opponents warn it would reduce revenue for essential services. The debate reflects the broader challenge of balancing economic incentives with public funding needs. The survey was conducted by HIT Strategies, a Washington, D. C. –based research firm, and has an estimated margin of error of 4. 12%. Its findings provide a snapshot of the concerns and aspirations that shape young people’s future plans in Greater Boston.
