Youth Voices Unite: A Call to Action for Safety and Support
Staten Island, New York City, USASat May 16 2026
Staten Island faces a growing problem: more teens are getting involved in shootings, even though overall city violence is falling. This trend shows that young people are slipping into dangerous situations faster and with fewer safeguards than before.
The Canvas Institute has seen the hidden struggles behind the numbers. They meet students who cannot manage their feelings, who feel trauma but lack words to express it, and who are on the brink of becoming either victims or perpetrators. The problem isn’t just police work, school policy, or family life; it’s a system that needs teamwork to fix.
For over twenty years, the Institute has worked directly with youth across Staten Island and New York City. Each week they reach more than 250 students using a Compassionate Systems approach that builds self‑awareness, emotional control, and good decision making. This isn’t just theory—it’s a real, immediate prevention effort.
On May 16 the Institute will host its 20th Youth Empowerment Summit at the St. George Theatre. Already, more than 600 teens have signed up and a thousand are expected to attend. The summit is designed as an intervention, not just a gathering. It offers mentorship, mental‑health resources, career guidance, and most importantly, a feeling of belonging.
But one event can’t solve the whole issue. Staten Island needs a coordinated response that brings together schools, community groups, police, mental‑health professionals, and trustworthy voices. Early investment, long‑term engagement, and treating prevention as seriously as enforcement are essential.
Too often we wait until after a tragedy to react, to speak out, and to question what went wrong. We already know the answers; now we must decide whether we will act with the urgency required.
The young people on Staten Island deserve stable spaces, reliable adults, and real chances to imagine a better future. The summit is one step, but it must spark broader action. If we delay, we lose more than time—we lose lives.
