YouTube Ends Teen Addiction Case in Florida

Florida, USAWed Jun 24 2026
A 15‑year‑old from Florida sued YouTube, claiming the platform caused mental health problems for kids. The case was settled before a jury heard it, and the settlement terms were kept private. The teen’s lawyer said that settling shows YouTube prefers to avoid a public trial, but they will keep fighting for other kids affected by social media addiction. Google’s spokesperson said the company resolved the lawsuit amicably and is still focused on creating age‑appropriate tools and parental controls. He noted that for more than ten years, YouTube has worked with families to provide safer online experiences. The young plaintiff said he started using social media around age eight and developed an addiction that led to sleeplessness, depression, and anxiety. He is also taking legal action against Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat in Los Angeles.
California has more than 3, 300 state lawsuits and another 2, 600 federal cases alleging social media addiction. A recent trial in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay $375 million for misleading users about child safety. Earlier this year, a jury awarded Meta and Google millions in damages after a woman claimed the platforms were intentionally addictive to children. Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube have also settled a Kentucky case that was heading to trial over a mental health crisis among students. The platforms paid $27 million together. The legal battles continue, with upcoming trials in Tennessee and a federal case involving several states. The outcomes could shape how social media companies address child safety in the future.
