Zero Day: A Messy Ending
USASat Feb 22 2025
The last episode of Zero Day, which wrapped up the search for those responsible for a devastating attack, left many viewers disappointed. The revelation that Dreyer and Alex were part of the conspiracy was a highlight, but the way it was handled was a letdown. The show tried to make George a hero, but this undermined the complexity of his character. The idea that his "enhanced interrogation tactics" were necessary for righteousness was troubling. Alex, realizing she couldn't stop Dreyer, tried to confess to her parents but was interrupted by another attack. George and Sheila were trapped in their car, facing an angry mob. Jeremy Lasch, who only appears when explanations are needed, revealed that high-level officials knew about the conspiracy from the start.
George met with Jeremy, who explained the situation, but George was too shaken to fully grasp it. Meanwhile, Sheila met Lily, and George went to Alex's apartment. Alex tried to justify her actions by saying that the country needed a shock to unite. The plan was to expose a vulnerability, scare everyone, and then have the commission save the day. George, upon hearing this, realized how flawed the plan was. Dreyer, confident he had gotten away with it, met with George. He explained his twisted logic, using examples from the political landscape to illustrate his point. The show missed the opportunity to delve deeper into the reality of the situation. Dreyer suggested pinning the blame on Lyndon and Kidder, letting George be the hero, and stepping down from their posts.
Sheila, who couldn't bear the thought of losing another child, agreed with this plan. President Mitchell also supported it, arguing that the country couldn't take another blow. George considered her points silently. On the morning of the announcement, Valerie handed Dreyer the report. George, during the joint session, initially stuck to the plan but then revealed the truth. He read a letter from Alex, who decided to turn herself in. The fallout for George was minimal, as he handed the mess to Mitchell and retreated to his estate. The mystery of Proteus was left unresolved, with inconclusive results from the tests on the electronic device. The show missed a chance to explore the intriguing storyline of Proteus, which could have been a thrilling addition.
