Zoe Saldaña: Ready for Her Close-Up in Directing
Tue Sep 10 2024
Zoe Saldana is ready to take on a new challenge - directing her very own film. The star of blockbusters like Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy has earned over $15 billion at the box office, but she's not content to rest on her laurels. In an engaging conversation with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, Saldana revealed that she dreams of directing an action-heist film in the style of Michael Mann's Heat someday. 'I've never seen a woman direct James Bond,' she pointed out. 'It's time for a change. '
But before tackling her own project, Saldana is making waves with her latest role in Netflix's Emilia Perez. She plays Rita, a Dominican immigrant lawyer struggling against discrimination in Mexico City. Saldana was initially hesitant to take on the part due to concerns over cultural appropriation. 'I had to make sure I was representing the character and community authentically,' she explained. 'Colonialism and racism are very real issues within Latin American countries that we don't often discuss openly. '
Through her research, Saldana realized Rita's story of invisibility as a Black woman resonated with her own experiences growing up in Dominican communities. She immersed herself in the role to bring this nuanced perspective to light.
With Emilia Perez set for release this fall and three more Avatar sequels on the horizon, it's clear Zoe Saldaña shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
