2026 Ituri Province Ebola epidemic

Summary

In May 2026, an epidemic of Ebola was reported in the Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the capital of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of Kampala in Uganda. The outbreak has been confirmed to involve the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, which complicates response efforts as existing vaccines and treatments for Ebola virus disease were developed for the Zaire ebolavirus. As of 16 May 2026, 88 deaths and 336 suspected cases have been reported.
