Entry/Exit System
European Union electronic system to replace passport stamps
Summary
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a system of the European Union (EU) for the automatic electronic monitoring and recording of border crossings of third-country nationals at all border crossings of the Schengen Area. The system, operated by eu-LISA, became operational at all Schengen Area border checkpoints on 10 April 2026, at which point passport stamps were discontinued for entries to and exits from the Schengen Area.

No suspension of this kind is approved by the Commission, the central EES database remains entirely live. The EU framework does have emergency safety valves built into the EES regulation to prevent massive border blockages. While individual member states have used emergency protocols to manage queues during the 2026 rollout, these are local operational adjustments, not a legal or systemic suspension of the system.

The EES system has its own database, data is not stored in the ETIAS database.
