Summary
The Korean alphabet is the modern writing system for the Korean language. It has gone by a variety of names, such as Chosŏn'gŭl in North Korea, Hangul internationally, and Hangeul in South Korea. The script's original name was Hunminjeongeum.

This wording has been bugging me for a while; this is clearer but clunky. Please fix if you can think of better. The issue is that this sentence shouldn't imply that vowels are being combined with consonants to form new letters; it's consonants + consonants and vowels + vowels
