The world of politics is full of mysteries.  One big question is how people change their minds about political issues.  This is tricky to study because of data limits.  But now, AI tools, especially generative large language models, are stepping in to help.  These tools can create lots of data and test different ways to persuade people.  This can give us new insights into how persuasion works.

In two online experiments, researchers used AI to test four different persuasive strategies.  These strategies were designed to see if customizing messages for individuals or making them more engaging would make a difference.  The results showed that all four AI-generated messages could change people's attitudes and even influence their voting choices.  However, customizing messages or making them more interactive did not make them much more persuasive than a simple, generic message.

This raises some interesting points.  First, it shows that AI can be a powerful tool for studying persuasion.  But it also suggests that persuasion might not be as complicated as we think. Another interesting finding is that while persuasive messages can change people's attitudes, they don't necessarily make people more tolerant of their political opponents.  This means that even if people's views become more moderate, they might still dislike or distrust those with different views.
