Crime rates on cruise ships have hit a two-year peak, raising concerns among travelers.  From January 1, 2025, to March 30, 2025, there were 48 reported crimes on cruise ships departing from the US.

    The crimes included 23 rapes, 10 sexual assaults, and seven assaults.  These incidents highlight the potential risks that passengers might face while enjoying their vacation at sea.  The confined spaces and large crowds on cruise ships can create an environment where crimes are more likely to occur.

    A former Secret Service agent and criminal justice lecturer pointed out that the cruise industry often tries to downplay these incidents.  This is because negative publicity can deter potential customers.  The industry thrives on providing a safe and enjoyable experience, so any bad news can be damaging.

    The agent also noted that large gatherings of people, especially when alcohol is involved, can increase the likelihood of criminal behavior.  This is true not just on cruise ships, but at any event where people are packed together and may be letting loose from their usual routines.

    One disturbing incident involved two illegal immigrants who were arrested for molesting a minor on a Royal Caribbean cruise.  The victims were a 14-year-old boy who reported that the men began masturbating in front of him in the ship’s sauna.  The men were later charged with child molestation and exhibition.  This case underscores the importance of vigilance and strict security measures on cruise ships.

    Another incident involved a brawl among Carnival Cruise Line passengers.  The fight broke out as passengers were disembarking from the ship.  A video of the incident showed people pushing, punching, and kicking each other in the cruise port.  As a result, 24 passengers were placed on a “do not sail list, ” barring them from future cruises with the company.  This incident highlights the need for better crowd control and security measures on cruise ships.

    The rise in crime on cruise ships should serve as a wake-up call for both the industry and travelers.  While cruises can be a fun and exciting way to travel, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks.  Passengers should take steps to ensure their safety, such as staying in well-lit areas, avoiding isolated spots, and being cautious around strangers.  The industry, on the other hand, needs to prioritize security and transparency.  By doing so, they can help ensure that passengers have a safe and enjoyable experience at sea.
