The waters of the Capibaribe River Estuarine System (CES) in Recife, Brazil, are under threat.  The source of this threat is a chemical called linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). The study also found that LAS concentrations were higher during ebb tides, especially during spring tides.  This is when the river's water flows out to the sea.  During these times, there is less mixing of the water, which means the pollution is more concentrated.  In contrast, areas with stronger marine influence had lower LAS concentrations.  This is because the ocean water helps to dilute the pollutant.

The results of the study highlight the critical levels of LAS in the CES.  This pollution poses a significant threat to the local biodiversity and the health of the people who depend on the river.  The DIB methodology used in the study proved to be an effective tool for environmental monitoring.  It is accurate, fast, cost-effective, and sustainable.  This makes it a promising approach for improving the management of wastewater and reducing pollution in the river.
