This has led to a dramatic shortage of food, with communal kitchens becoming the primary source of meals for many.  Thousands of people queue for hours, often in vain, as the supplies dwindle.

   The blockade is part of a broader strategy to pressure Hamas, but it is the civilians who are paying the heaviest price. The lack of food is not just a humanitarian crisis but also a political tool, used to exert control and punish.  The United Nations and other aid groups have criticized the blockade, arguing that it is causing unnecessary suffering and that a new aid system proposed by Israel could be used to further political goals. The other thresholds, such as high levels of child malnutrition and increased mortality rates, are not yet met, but experts warn that it is only a matter of time if the current conditions persist.  The blockade and military campaign are pushing Gaza towards a humanitarian catastrophe.  If the situation does not improve, the majority of the population will face severe food and water shortages, civil unrest will escalate, health services will collapse, and disease will spread.

   The international community has a role to play in preventing this crisis.  Governments and aid organizations must pressure Israel to allow unimpeded humanitarian access.  Silence in the face of this man-made starvation is complicity.  The situation in Gaza is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict and blockade on civilian populations.  It is a call to action for the international community to step in and prevent a full-blown famine.
