The Israeli military has kicked off a major ground operation in Gaza, dubbed "Gideon's Chariots. The Israeli army also made a move in the West Bank, raiding Balata village near Nablus and detaining one person. This happened on May 18, 2025.

    The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire. Over 160 people have been killed since Saturday alone, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health. Since the ceasefire ended in March, the death toll has risen to at least 3, 131, with over 8, 600 injured. Conditions on the ground are worsening rapidly, with bombardments making it nearly impossible to access emergency care.  This is a big problem because it means that people who are hurt or sick might not get the help they need.  The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed alarm at the escalating violence and has called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. He described the situation as "beyond description, beyond atrocious, and beyond inhumane. " This is a strong statement that shows how bad things have gotten.

    The Israeli Prime Minister's security cabinet gave the green light for this operation back on May 5. The plan includes a large-scale attack that could displace most of the population in the Gaza Strip. This is a big concern because it means that many people might have to leave their homes and could end up in refugee camps or other temporary shelters.  The Israeli Defense Minister has also stated that Israeli forces plan to stay in Gaza even after the operation is over.
