The Northeast is bracing for a rough day as severe weather looms.  More than 11. 5 million people, including those in the Philadelphia area and most of New Jersey, are in the path of a severe thunderstorm watch.  The National Weather Service issued this warning around 10 a. m. Friday, and it remains active until 5 p. m.  This is not just any storm.  Meteorologists are predicting heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail.  Wind gusts could reach up to 70 mph, and hail up to two inches in diameter is possible.  Lightning strikes are also expected to be frequent.

The storm's impact is far-reaching.  It affects over 200 hospitals and nearly 2, 600 schools.  This means that many people, including students and patients, could be in harm's way.  It's crucial for everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions.  In southern New Jersey, the situation is even more urgent.  A flash flood warning is in effect until 5:45 p. m.  Residents in areas like Atlantic City, Pleasantville, and Ocean City are advised to move to higher ground immediately.  Walking or driving through floodwaters can be extremely dangerous.

The storm has already started to show its force.  Around 1:30 p. m. , Doppler radar detected heavy rain across the affected areas.  Flash flooding has either begun or is expected to start soon.  So far, between 0. 5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen, but this could quickly intensify to 2 to 4 inches per hour.  The National Weather Service station in Mount Holly, N. J. , has also issued a tornado warning for specific areas.  This warning is in effect until 2:30 p. m.  Villas, Cape May Court House, and Wildwood in New Jersey, as well as Georgetown and Millsboro in Delaware, could see quarter-size hail and potential tornado activity.

The storm's potential damage is significant.  Roofs, windows, and vehicles are all at risk.  It's important for residents to secure loose objects outdoors and stay indoors during the storm.
