The courtroom was tense as a retired police lieutenant took the stand for the second time in the Karen Read murder retrial. Paul Gallagher, a former Canton police lieutenant, was back to discuss his unusual approach to processing the crime scene outside 34 Fairview Road. Gallagher's methods involved using a leaf blower and red Solo cups, which raised some eyebrows. The scene was a snowy lawn where Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe was found unresponsive on January 29, 2022.

The defense team had some questions about Gallagher's choices. They wanted to know why he didn't send an officer to get proper evidence collection materials. Gallagher argued that the 15 minutes it might have taken could have made a difference in the initial investigation. The defense team was skeptical, especially since the red Solo cups used were not typically used for evidence collection and were not sealed.

The prosecution played video clips showing the Canton police using a leaf blower to move the top layers of snow. Gallagher pointed out a patch of bare ground where O’Keefe’s body had been found. The investigators also found a broken cocktail glass and apparent blood drops in the snow, which they collected in the red Solo cups.

Earlier in the day, jurors heard from Katie McLaughlin, a Canton firefighter and paramedic. McLaughlin testified that she heard a "distraught" Read say, "I hit him" four times while speaking with first responders at the scene. Three other witnesses, Sarah Levinson, Heather Maxon, and Ryan Nagel, testified about what they saw outside 34 Fairview Road after midnight on January 29.

The trial is the second for Read. Her first murder trial ended with a hung jury last July. The defense argues that Read was framed in a vast conspiracy involving law enforcement and afterparty guests. They suggest that O’Keefe was actually wounded during an altercation inside the house and then dumped outside in the snow.

The prosecution alleges that Read, who was 45 at the time, deliberately backed her SUV into O’Keefe, her boyfriend of two years, while dropping him off at another Boston officer’s home. They claim she left him to die in a blizzard. The defense, however, paints a different picture, suggesting that Read was a "convenient outsider" in this complex web of events.
