The Rust movie tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind the scenes.  The film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, has been freed from prison after serving 14 months.  She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter following a two-week trial.  This trial was the result of a fatal accident on the movie set in October 2021.  The accident resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuries to the film's director, Joel Souza.

    The Rust movie set was a place of chaos and mismanagement.  Gutierrez was one of three people charged in Hutchins’ death.  She was the only one to receive a felony conviction.  Prosecutors accused Gutierrez of reckless handling of firearms and ammunition.  They also alleged that she brought live bullets to the set and mixed them with dummy bullets.  Gutierrez denied these allegations.  There was no conclusive evidence presented about the origins of the live bullets.

    Actor Alec Baldwin was also charged in the shooting.  He pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.  Baldwin was the one who pointed the gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal.  The judge overseeing the case dismissed the charge against Baldwin.  The judge found that prosecutors and sheriff’s deputies had concealed evidence from Baldwin’s legal team.  This prejudiced the case against Baldwin.  Assistant director David Halls was also charged in the shooting.  He pleaded no contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received a suspended sentence.

    The Rust movie tragedy has shined a harsh light on film set safety.  The film was racked with problems, including allegations of safety rule violations and hiring inexperienced crew members.  Gutierrez was just 24 years old and had only worked on one other film as head armorer.  She was also tasked with the job of prop assistant.  Hours before the fatal shooting, the camera crew had walked off the job to protest safety concerns and a lack of housing near the film’s set.  Crew members complained about earlier accidental gun discharges.

    The criminal phase of the Rust saga has concluded with Gutierrez’s release.  However, several civil lawsuits against Baldwin and the producers remain unresolved.  The film was finally released in the U. S. this month on just a handful of screens.  The Rust movie tragedy is a reminder that safety should always be a top priority on any film set.
