The Dallas City Council has been facing some issues with how they handle their meetings. It is not uncommon for meetings to start late or for items to be suddenly removed from the agenda. This can cause confusion for both city staff and council members who are not aware of the changes. Some council members, including the mayor, have been known to end meetings early, sometimes hours before the scheduled finish time. This can disrupt the flow of the meeting and make it difficult for everyone to stay on track.  It is not a major crisis, but it is not an efficient way to conduct business.

Five council members recently suggested some changes to improve the situation. They proposed that meetings can start even if the mayor is not present, which has happened more often than it should. They also suggested that council members should inform the mayor and city secretary if they need to leave a meeting early. This is a response to the mayor's habit of leaving meetings around 3 p. m. , before they are supposed to end.

Some of the proposed changes are not as useful. For example, some council members want to limit the mayor's power over committee assignments. While it is true that the mayor sometimes uses committees as a way to reward or punish members, taking away the mayor's power is not the solution. Instead, the council should focus on improving collaboration and hard work within the office.

The conversation about improving council meetings is a step in the right direction. It is important for all council members to participate in these discussions and to stay until the end. The public should also be involved in this process, as they are the ones who will ultimately benefit from more efficient and effective council meetings.

It is time for the Dallas City Council to tidy up their meetings and improve their overall performance. By making some changes to the rules and encouraging better collaboration, the council can ensure that their meetings are more productive and efficient. This will not only benefit the council members but also the citizens of Dallas who rely on them to make important decisions.
