The movie Sinners is about more than just vampires and twins.  At its heart, it's about a young musician named Sammie.  He has a special gift for playing the blues.  His music brings people together, including some unwanted guests—vampires.  These vampires want to join in the fun, but things take a dark turn.  By the end of the night, Sammie is the only human left alive.  Instead of going back to his family, he hits the road and becomes a famous blues player.

Years later, in 1992, Sammie is performing when two familiar faces appear: Stack and Mary.  They were turned into vampires back in 1932 and have been living ever since.  They offer Sammie a chance to join them in eternal life, but he declines.  He chooses to keep living his life as a mortal musician.  This scene was a big moment for the director.  He saw it as a way to honor his uncle, who passed away.  The director had a hard time shooting this scene.  He was worried about the safety of the actors, but it turned out to be a hug, not a bite.  This moment made him realize the true heart of the movie.

Loss is a big theme in Sinners.  Many characters have lost loved ones.  For Sammie, that night at the juke joint was a high point.  He felt alive playing for the crowd.  The same goes for Stack.  It was the last time he saw his friend Smoke, felt the sun, and experienced true freedom.  Despite the trauma, music brought them together then and now.  It keeps loved ones alive in memory long after they're gone.

The director's uncle loved blues music and vinyl records.  He also enjoyed watching baseball.  The director felt like he was bringing his uncle's spirit back to life by making this movie.  The blues music in the film is a way to summon the spirits of the past and future, just like other music from the African diaspora.  For Sammie, music is more than just entertainment.  It's a way to connect with the past and keep loved ones alive in his heart.

The director had a tough time when his uncle passed away.  He felt guilty for not saying goodbye.  This movie was his way of dealing with that loss.  It's a love letter to his family history and a tribute to his uncle.  The blues music in the film is a big part of that.  It's a way to honor the past and keep the spirit of loved ones alive.  The director's uncle loved the blues, and so does Sammie.  In a way, Sammie's journey is a reflection of the director's own journey in dealing with loss.
