MIT's president, Sally Kornbluth, wasn't having it. She wrote a letter to the Department of Education. She said MIT values free thinking and open competition. The university believes in merit-based admissions. They don't discriminate based on financial status. Kornbluth acknowledged that MIT already meets many of the compact's standards. But she drew the line at the core premise. She believes scientific funding should be based on merit, not political agendas.

The Department of Education didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Other universities are still reviewing the compact. Some, like the University of Texas, seemed receptive. But MIT stood firm. They chose independence over federal funds.

This isn't just about MIT. It's about the bigger picture. Universities are places of free thought and open debate. They should be able to make decisions based on what's best for their students and faculty. Not based on political agendas.
