Paramount Global is making some big changes to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These changes are happening because of new rules from the Trump administration.  These rules are affecting how companies approach inclusion and diversity.

Trump's administration has been pushing to shut down DEI programs across the federal government. Now, they're putting pressure on private companies to follow suit.  This is a significant shift in how companies approach diversity and inclusion.

Paramount is one of the companies affected.  They recently sent a memo to their employees. The memo said that some of their DEI programs will be changing to comply with the new rules.  The company will no longer set goals based on race, ethnicity, sex, or gender for hiring. They will also stop collecting this data from job applicants, unless it's required by law.

Paramount's leadership is focused on building a high-performing and inclusive culture. They plan to do this through leadership development and workforce engagement.  This shift in focus might mean expanding some programs and ending others.

These changes come at a time when Paramount is also dealing with other big issues.  The company is waiting for approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its merger with Skydance Media.  This merger is worth $8 billion and is expected to close in the first half of 2025.

There's more to the story.  The Trump administration has been involved in other legal battles.  Before the 2024 U. S. election, Trump sued CBS News over a "60 Minutes" interview with former VP Kamala Harris.  Trump claimed the interview was deceptively edited.  He recently amended the lawsuit to demand $20 billion in damages.

The FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, who was appointed by Trump, has said this lawsuit could be a factor in the FCC's review of the Skydance-Paramount merger.  Carr has also opened an investigation into the DEI practices of Comcast and NBCUniversal.  He's concerned that their DEI programs might not comply with FCC regulations and civil rights laws.  Comcast has said they will cooperate with the investigation.

Last year, CBS was sued by a longtime script coordinator.  He claimed he was passed over for writing jobs because he is a straight, white man.  CBS has argued that it has a First Amendment right to hire who it wants.  This case is still pending.

The changes at Paramount raise questions about the future of DEI initiatives.  Will other companies follow suit?  How will these changes affect the workplace culture?  Only time will tell.
