There are several upcoming events and initiatives in the community that focus on education, health, and support for families and students.  One of the upcoming events is a doula certification workshop.  Doulas are trained professionals who support families during childbirth, providing physical, emotional, and informational help.  This workshop, happening over two weekends in July, is open to adults aged 18 and above.  It's a great opportunity for those interested in supporting families during childbirth.  The workshop will be held at Franciscan Health Crown Point.  Participants need to attend all four days to receive their certificate.  Registration closes on July 8, so interested individuals should sign up soon.

The Gary Community School Corporation is hosting a free conference for parents on May 31.  The Power of Partnership Parent Conference will feature engaging sessions, activities, and opportunities to connect with community resources.  The event will include a resource fair, massages, self-care opportunities, food, and a keynote address by Crystal Melton.  Childcare will be provided, making it easier for parents to attend.  Those interested can register through the GCSC website.

Valparaiso University has appointed a new senior vice president of enrollment and marketing.  LeAnn Hughes brings over 20 years of experience to the role, having previously worked at Illinois Wesleyan University and Tusculum University.  She will oversee various departments, including Undergraduate and Graduate Admission, Financial Aid, and Strategic Enrollment and Marketing Initiatives.  Her extensive background in enrollment management and marketing will be valuable in her new position.

The Northwest Indiana Literacy Council has donated a mobile library to the neonatal intensive care unit at Franciscan Health Crown Point.  This donation provides families with a variety of children’s books to read to their infants.  The mobile library was made possible through a grant from the Legacy Foundation.  This initiative supports early literacy and family bonding, which are crucial for a child's development.

There are also opportunities for students and entrepreneurs in the community.  The PNW Big Sell pitch competition awarded investment capital to three innovators for their startup concepts.  The event, sponsored by Northern Indiana Public Service Company and PNW’s College of Business, highlighted innovative ideas and provided seed funding to the winners.  This competition encourages entrepreneurship and innovation among students and community members.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new program for full-time college students.  C-StEP offers part-time employment for students majoring in law enforcement-related fields, providing real-life experience working inside the Porter County Jail.  This program is a great way for students to gain practical experience while pursuing their education.  Interested students can apply through the Porter County Sheriff’s Office website.

The Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County is seeking quotes for a project involving the grinding of organic brush and wood waste.  The project includes the removal and hauling of materials from four locations within Porter County.  A pre-bid meeting will be held to provide detailed information on the project requirements, followed by a guided site visit.  This initiative supports waste reduction and recycling efforts in the community.
