Warren Pierce, a name synonymous with Detroit radio, has passed away at the age of 82. He was a familiar voice to many, having spent nearly four decades at WJR-AM (760). Pierce was known for his engaging interviews, movie reviews, and lively discussions on "The Warren Pierce Show. " His career was marked by a genuine connection with his listeners, whom he considered his most important audience.

Pierce's journey in radio began in the 1970s, and he quickly became a pioneer in talk radio. His show was a mix of interviews, news, and weather, all delivered with his signature friendly and upbeat style. He had the unique opportunity to cover major events worldwide, including the 1981 royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the Grand Prix in Monaco, and the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. These experiences showcased his versatility and dedication to his craft.

Before the era of email, Pierce maintained four large Rolodexes filled with professional contacts, a testament to his extensive network. He was also a passionate fan of the University of Michigan football team, often providing sideline reports during the Bo Schembechler era. His love for the Wolverines was just one aspect of his multifaceted career.

In the 1990s, the landscape of talk radio shifted towards more confrontational and politically driven programming. This change led Pierce to part ways with WJR in 1993. He then transitioned to television, working as a morning news anchor at WJBK-TV (Channel 2). However, his tenure there was cut short in 1995 due to a controversy involving free car loans from automakers. Pierce defended his actions, comparing them to reading a book before interviewing an author.

After his time at WJBK-TV, Pierce continued to work in radio, joining other stations including WYUR-AM (1310). He eventually returned to WJR in 2000, where he remained until 2019. His final stint in radio was a weekend show at WDFN-AM. In September 2024, Pierce announced on his Facebook page that he would stop posting weekend updates due to serious medical news. His obituary highlights his impressive career, noting that he interviewed over 70, 000 people and left a lasting impact on listeners across Michigan.

The funeral for Warren Pierce will be held at 10 a. m. on November 4 at the Dorfman Chapel, with a livestream available for those who cannot attend in person. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Golden Retriever Rescue of Michigan.
