Sheriff Chad Chronister, who was chosen by former President Donald Trump to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has decided to step back from the role. Chronister, who currently serves as the top law enforcement officer in Hillsborough County, Florida, announced his withdrawal on Tuesday. He cited the importance and weight of the job as reasons for his decision. This marks the second time Trump's appointment for a key role requiring Senate confirmation has pulled out.

Chronister's selection had sparked criticism from conservative groups. They pointed to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly his arrest of a megachurch pastor for violating safer-at-home orders. In March 2020, the sheriff arrested the pastor for holding services with hundreds of people, which went against the state's guidelines to limit the virus spread. "This should be a wake-up call, " Chronister said then.

Additionally, some conservatives raised concerns about Chronister's stance on immigration. In a video from 2023, he praised the diversity of his community and clarified that his office does not focus on federal immigration enforcement. This statement contradicts Trump's strong stance on immigration crackdown, which was a significant part of his campaign and planned administration.

Trump's first pick for Attorney General, former Representative Matt Gaetz, also withdrew his name due to a federal sex trafficking investigation. This leaves two crucial law enforcement positions unfilled as the administration begins.
