Aoun, 61, joined the army during Lebanon's civil war and rose through the ranks to become the army commander in 2017. He's known for his calm demeanor, even under pressure. For instance, during the fierce battle of Adma in 1990, he remained steady and focused.

During his time as army chief, Aoun oversaw the military's response to several crises, including the push against Islamic State militants and the Hezbollah-Israel conflict. He also had to deal with the economic crisis that hit the army hard, with soldiers' salaries dropping to almost nothing.

Aoun's election as president has sparked controversy. Some argue it violates the constitution, which bars sitting army commanders from being elected. Others see it as a result of foreign influence. Still, Aoun's supporters see him as the right person for the challenging times Lebanon is facing.
