The University of Michigan has made a big splash in the world of lasers.  They have a new tool called ZEUS.  It is a laser that can produce an incredible 2 petawatts of power.  That is 2 quadrillion watts.  It is a lot of power.  But it is not like the lasers in science fiction movies.  It is not going to blow up planets.  It is used for serious science.  It is used for experiments in medicine, quantum physics, and materials science.

The ZEUS laser is not cheap.  It cost $16 million to build.  It took over four years to make.  It has special parts like 7-inch sapphire crystals with titanium atoms.  There are only a few of these crystals in the world.  It is not easy to use.  It is not like a laser pointer.  It needs a lot of steps to work.  It uses pump lasers to increase the power.  It also uses optical devices to stretch out the pulse.  This keeps the pulse from tearing the air apart.  The pulse ends up being very small.  It is 0. 8 microns wide.  This makes the power very intense.

The first experiment with ZEUS was interesting.  It was done by Franklin Dollar.  He is a professor of physics and astronomy.  He shot the laser at a cell with helium.  This made plasma.  It ripped electrons off the atoms.  This made a soup of free electrons and ions.  The electrons moved behind the laser pulse.  This is like wakesurfers behind a speedboat.  This is called wakefield acceleration.  The goal is to make electron beams.  These beams are as powerful as those from particle accelerators.  But they do not need expensive hardware.  They do not need long installations.

ZEUS is housed in a big facility.  It is the size of a school gymnasium.  It is at the university’s Gérard Mourou Center for Ultrafast Optical Science.  ZEUS is the successor to the HERCULES laser.  HERCULES reached 300 terawatts in 2007.  ZEUS was announced in 2022.  It is double the power of other lasers in the US.  It can eventually deliver up to 3 petawatts.  But it is not the most powerful laser in the world.  The laser at the European ELI-NP laboratory in Romania is more powerful.  It peaks at 10 petawatts.
