Janelle Hopkin, the President and Managing Director of Spice Island Beach Resort, is a third-generation hotelier. Her journey in the hospitality industry began at 16, when her father insisted she work throughout the resort. This hands-on experience sparked her passion for the business. She knew then that she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps.
Hopkin's father, Sir Royston Hopkin, purchased and renamed Spice Island Inn in 1987. He transformed it into a cornerstone of Grenadian tourism. After completing her degree in hospitality in Switzerland, Hopkin returned to Grenada. She worked alongside her father until he named her his successor in 2015. When he passed away five years ago, the transition was smooth. Her leadership had already been woven into the fabric of the resort.
Hopkin's vision for the resort is to deliver an understated, elegant beach vacation. She believes in personal touches that can't be replicated elsewhere. Upon arrival, guests receive a signature cocktail, a personalized handwritten welcome note, and a gift box of locally-made gifts. This attention to detail extends to the culinary experience. Taking over the reins of the resort at age 35 with a then one-and-a-half-year-old son was a balancing act. Her father's passing in February 2020 came just weeks before the global COVID-19 pandemic shut down the travel industry. Yet, with her succession already established in 2015, the path forward was clear.
The resort's closure during the pandemic was a difficult time. Approximately ten staff members, including the general manager, showed up the day after the shutdown without any discussion of salary. They showed up because this is their love. This commitment to her team manifested powerfully during the pandemic. Hopkin's personal touch is evident in her interactions with guests. She believes in creating experiences that are not generic or mass-market. Her must-do recommendations for visitors to Grenada emphasize connection above all.
