A Homecoming to the Treasure Coast

Patrick Bernadeau, a sports writer who has lived in Port St. Lucie longer than anyone else on the Treasure Coast, returned home in 2024 after a seven‑year stint elsewhere. He left in 2017 to chase new opportunities across the country, but family ties pulled him back. His parents are aging, and he wanted to be close enough to help them when needed. The city’s relaxed rhythm has become a draw for him. Unlike the bustling cities he once called home, Port St. Lucie offers a slower pace and a diverse community that feels more like family than a destination. He now appreciates the local amenities, from 24‑hour pharmacies to simple pleasures like a good slice of pizza—things he learned to value after traveling. Bernadeau’s story is rooted in personal history. He moved here from Brockton, Massachusetts in 2001, attended Fort Pierce Central High School, and earned degrees at Indian River Community College and Florida Atlantic University. He grew up with a strong sense of community, which made the decision to return after years away feel natural.When asked what he loves most about the area, he pointed to his family. His sisters, nieces, nephews, and other relatives all live nearby, making everyday life richer. The biggest motivation was spending more time with his parents, who have spent a lifetime together and now need support. A close call when his 79‑year‑old father collapsed in the driveway reminded him of how quickly life can change. Despite initial reservations—he once joked that Port St. Lucie was “Port St. Lousy” because it seemed too quiet for a teenager—Bernadeau now enjoys the city’s calm and safety. He sees it as an ideal place for his current life stage, especially after years of fast‑paced living elsewhere. He also noted a few areas for growth. The lack of a downtown hub limits social gathering spots, and he hopes future development will create a central community space. Still, the city’s growth in diversity and accessibility has made him feel at home.
