A new healthy food spot lands at UC San Diego
San Diego, USATue Jun 23 2026
UC San Diego students and staff will soon get a fresh dining option this fall when a trendy health-focused restaurant opens on campus. The place is Goop Kitchen, a branch of Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness empire, and it’s joining the new Triton Center—a sleek building meant for studying, relaxing, and grabbing a bite. Unlike typical campus cafeterias, this spot skips fried foods and sugary snacks, focusing instead on meals like salads, soups, and rotisserie chicken raised without antibiotics.
But not everyone sees this as a win. While the menu avoids gluten and refined sugar, it doesn’t guarantee safety for people with celiac disease, meaning some diners might still need to be careful. The restaurant also fits into Goop’s bigger business plan, which sells everything from skincare to clothing under the "clean living" brand. Some critics argue that labeling food as "clean" can feel more like marketing than real health advice.
The Triton Center itself is a big investment for the university, designed to attract students with its mix of food, retail, and hangout spaces. Supporters say it’ll become a hub for campus life, while skeptics wonder if a high-end eatery belongs in a public university setting. Either way, the fall opening will test whether students actually prefer paying extra for meals marketed as "nutrient-dense" over cheaper, traditional options.
