RD Riccoboni, a celebrated artist from San Diego, has always had a unique way of telling stories through his vibrant and bold paintings. His first limited-edition picture book, "Knights of The Vermillion Rose: A Science Fiction Fairytale of the Gay Romantic Comedy Kind," is a collection of two chapters from a novel he's still working on. The book features his vibrant paintings alongside his words, creating a unique and inclusive story that resonates with the LGBTQ community.
A Journey of Resilience and Inspiration
Riccoboni's journey as an artist hasn't been easy. Growing up in Connecticut, he faced criticism and discouragement from friends and relatives who told him he couldn't make a living as an artist. But he didn't let that stop him. He moved to San Diego, where he found inspiration in the work of other artists like David Hockney and Keith Haring.
These artists showed him that being a queer artist was not something to be ashamed of. In fact, it was something to be celebrated. Riccoboni's art is a testament to that. His colorful and bold paintings capture the essence of the LGBTQ community, from the AIDS crisis to the legalization of gay marriage.
Recognition and Impact
Riccoboni's work has not gone unnoticed. His painting of Balboa Park's California Tower adorned with the Pride flag was displayed in the California state capitol during Toni Atkins' tenure as president pro tempore of the California State Senate. It is now part of the permanent collection at the San Diego History Center.
With his new book, Riccoboni is continuing his mission of telling inclusive stories. He hopes that his book will make people from the LGBTQ community feel seen and accepted. He also wants to inspire other artists to express themselves authentically and use their art to make a difference.
