Active Parents, Happier Homes: What Exercise Does to Family Bonds

ChinaSun Nov 01 2026

Active parents tend to get along better with their young children. Researchers wanted to test this idea and find out why it happens. They looked at how moving the body connects to feelings inside the home.

Seven hundred nineteen parents took part in the survey. They lived in six Chinese cities: Chengdu, Suining, Meishan, Lanzhou, Xianyang, and Xi'an. The team used convenience and snowball sampling to recruit them. One parent answered every question.

Surveys measured physical activity, emotion regulation, personal wellbeing, and the connection between parent and child. Researchers ran the data through AMOS 23.0 and SPSS 29.0. The results showed a clear direct link between how much a parent exercises and the quality of the relationship with their child.

Exercise also helped parents handle emotions better and feel happier with life. Those two improvements then supported a stronger connection with the child. There was even a chain effect: more activity led to better emotion skills, which led to higher wellbeing, which led to a better relationship. Families might want to consider daily movement as part of building closeness with little ones. It is one more reason to keep moving.
