The Middle East has been on the brink of chaos, with the Israeli-Lebanon border being the latest flashpoint. The situation escalated after an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens more. The attack came just hours after Hezbollah pounded northern Israel with 140 rockets. The Israeli military claimed that its airstrike killed Ibrahim Akil, a senior Hezbollah military official, but Hezbollah has not confirmed his death.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, 15 people were killed overnight in Israeli attacks, with the Palestinian Health Ministry reporting that more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since Hamas' Oct. 7 attack. The Israeli military says it targets only militants, but its claims are disputed by many, who argue that the military has failed to distinguish between fighters and civilians.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Israel has shortened its planned trip to the US, citing rising tensions with Hezbollah. The decision has raised concerns that the nearly year-long Gaza war could spread into a larger regional conflict.
