Have you ever thought about what's in the smoke you see during a wildfire? Besides being scary and bad for the environment, it also contains chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These are created when things like wood burn. Usually, we encounter tiny amounts from car fumes and industrial smog. But during wildfires, these chemicals fill the air more heavily.
Recently, researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, made a surprising discovery. They used computer models to look at how 15 common PAHs stick to our DNA. Guess what they found? Six of these PAHs stick better to a specific spot on our DNA called a mutational hotspot. This spot is linked to about a third of all cancers. Benzoapyrene, a well-known PAH, doesn't stick as well as these six. It's like PAHs have a special key that unlocks our DNA's weak spot. This means that during wildfires, we're exposed to chemicals that could potentially increase our risk of cancer. It's a hidden danger lurking in the smoke.
