James B. Milliken has been chosen to lead the University of California system. He will be the 22nd person to hold this position.  The University of California is a big deal. It has 10 campuses, six medical centers, and three labs. Milliken is no stranger to big jobs. He has been the head of the University of Texas system since 2018. Before that, he led the City University of New York and the University of Nebraska.

    Milliken has a history of making higher education more accessible. At the University of Texas, he started a program to cover tuition for students from low-income families. He also boosted enrollment and research funding. At the City University of New York, he helped double the graduation rate for community college students. He did this by expanding a program called ASAP. He also launched a medical school focused on helping underserved communities.

    The University of California is known for its research and public service. Milliken understands this. He has said that he is honored to join the talented people already working there. He wants to expand education, research, healthcare, and public service. Milliken has a lot of experience leading public institutions. He has done this during times of big changes in higher education. Many people think he is the right person for the job at the right time.

He and his wife have three adult children. Milliken will start his new job on August 1, 2025. He will replace the current president, who is stepping down in July 2025. It has nearly 300, 000 students and generates over $80 billion in economic activity. It offers world-class education, research, and healthcare.  The new leader will have big shoes to fill. But Milliken's experience and commitment to public education make him a strong choice.  Students and faculty have high hopes for his leadership. They want someone who understands the importance of affordability and equity in higher education. They believe Milliken can champion the university's mission and honor its responsibility to the community.  Milliken's collaborative spirit and belief in education make him a good fit for this role. He will need to navigate changes in higher education and position the university for long-term success.  His track record shows he can handle the challenges ahead.
