Community Hub for Sport, Culture and Work

Shenzhen Guangming District, China,Sat Apr 11 2026
The Yutang Cultural and Sports Center sits in Shenzhen’s Guangming District, tucked inside the Tianliao Community. It is surrounded by a mix of old industrial sites and tight urban‑village housing, making it a bridge between factory workers and residents. The building covers roughly 54, 690 square metres, with almost half above ground and the rest below. Designed as a mixed‑use civic complex, it hosts a sports hall for local athletes, a library that doubles as a study space, an art gallery and performance venue for creatives, a health clinic for everyday care, a bus terminal that eases travel, and retail shops to meet daily needs. The layout aims to serve both the nearby community and the workers who commute from the neighbouring factories.
The project emerged during a period of industrial renewal, meaning the surrounding area is still changing. The architects wanted to create a permanent anchor that could adapt as the neighborhood evolves. They achieved this by integrating many functions into one footprint, encouraging people to stay in the area for work, play and health services. A team of designers, engineers, and landscape specialists collaborated on the site. They used local expertise for the façade and lighting, ensuring the building blends with Shenzhen’s rapid growth while still standing out as a cultural landmark. The result is a space that feels both functional and inviting, encouraging community interaction in an otherwise busy urban setting.
