Daily Habits That Put Leg Arteries at Risk

Shanxi Province, ChinaFri Oct 16 2026

Researchers studied a condition that blocks blood flow in the legs. It is called lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans. They looked at 300 people who were already at high risk. These patients came from a large hospital in Shanxi Province, China. The team followed them for two years.

The scientists used a lifestyle survey to learn about daily routines. They wanted to see which habits mattered most. After crunching the data, six habits stood out. Smoking was a major factor. Sitting for long stretches was just as bad. Diets high in salt, fat, or cholesterol also played a role. Staying up late rounded out the list.

The numbers show how strong the links are. Smokers had an odds ratio of 2.289. That means their risk was more than double. People who sat too much had an odds ratio of 2.259. High-salt eaters had 2.040. High-fat eaters had 1.988. High-cholesterol eaters had 1.571. Night owls had 1.826. Every result had a P value below 0.05, so the patterns are real and not just chance.

This means everyday choices shape artery health. Communities could step in with education and support. Quitting smoking, standing up more, and picking better foods might prevent serious problems. The study suggests that focused programs can help high-risk groups before damage happens. Which habit feels hardest to change?
