Dubai's Latest Luxury: Coffee at a Staggering Price
In a city known for its opulence, Dubai has introduced a new level of extravagance with a coffee priced at a jaw-dropping $980 per cup. This isn't just any coffee; it's brewed from rare Panamanian beans that have fetched record-breaking prices at auctions.
The Julith Cafe Experience
The Julith cafe, nestled in an industrial area that has become a haven for coffee enthusiasts, is serving this luxurious beverage. The coffee, described as having floral and fruity notes reminiscent of tea, is a blend of:
- White floral jasmine
- Citrus flavors like orange and bergamot
- Hints of apricot and peach
The cafe's co-founder, Serkan Sagsoz, compares the taste to honey, delicate and sweet.
The Auction and the Beans
The beans used for this brew were purchased at an auction in Panama after a fierce bidding war that lasted hours and drew hundreds of bids. Dubai has a history of setting records for luxury items, and this coffee is no exception.
Record-Breaking Prices
Just last month, another cafe in the city set a Guinness World Record for the most expensive cup of coffee. The new record has left some residents shocked but not surprised, given Dubai's reputation for luxury living.
The Julith cafe paid a staggering $600,000 for 20 kilograms of the Nido 7 Geisha beans, grown on a plantation near Panama's Baru volcano. These beans are highly sought after by:
- Asian buyers
- Emirati coffee enthusiasts
- Collectors
However, the cafe has no plans to share its treasure beyond a small amount reserved for Dubai's ruling family.
Coffee Price Surge in the U.S.
While this extravagant coffee is making headlines, it's worth noting that coffee prices in the U.S. have also been surging. The cost of roasted coffee has jumped nearly 19%, reaching a record high of $9.14 per pound in September. Factors driving this increase include:
- Volatile weather in major coffee-producing countries
- American tariffs on foreign imports
