Fighting the Freeze: NYC Workers Share Their Winter Hustle

New York City workers are tough. They don't let freezing temperatures stop them from doing their jobs. On a particularly cold day, vendors, dog walkers, and pedicab drivers braved the bitter cold to make a living. Duane Jackson, a 75-year-old street vendor, sold hats, scarves, and gloves in midtown Manhattan. He's been doing this for about 30 years. Even though it was freezing, he kept working. "It's January in New York, " he said. "What else would you expect? " He also mentioned that he could be in Buffalo, where it was even colder. Diony Rodriguez, a 38-year-old pedicab driver in Central Park, also dealt with the frigid temperatures. He has three kids to feed and bills to pay. "Customers come because they might not have another day in New York, " he said. "So I'm here for the people that come today. "Zoey Pearce, a 26-year-old dog walker, was out with five dogs. "They still have to go, " she said. She uses hand warmers and foot warmers to stay warm. "I need the money, " she said. "I'm still in school. Unless it's a hurricane or a blizzard, I don't mind coming out here. " The city's Office for Emergency Management advised people to bundle up to avoid frostbite or hypothermia. Lefteris Amasiadis, a 21-year-old food cart worker, took that advice. He was wearing heavy clothes, but he admitted that sometimes it's not enough. "All this week it's gonna be cold, " he said. "But everybody needs the money, so that's why I'm here. " The weather is supposed to warm up a bit in the middle of the week, but the weekend forecast shows temperatures in the teens with the potential for snow.
