From Science to Sculpture: Linda Graham's Artistic Journey

Linda Graham's path from science to art is a story of curiosity and discovery. Graham's artistic journey began in the 1960s when she took clay classes in Washington, D. C. She initially wanted to make practical items like dishes, but soon realized that repetition wasn't for her. She preferred the unpredictability of creating unique pieces. This mindset has led her to create a wide range of works, from ceramic sculptures to light installations. Her latest series, Denver Under Water, is inspired by geology and zoology, featuring layers and imagined creatures.Graham's impact extends beyond her art. She founded the Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA) in 1993. Her goal was to create a safe space for kids to explore and create. She believed that art should be accessible to everyone, not just those who could afford it. DAVA started with simple projects, like making masks with elementary school students, and grew into a thriving arts organization. DAVA's mission was to bring art into the community. Graham saw the potential in the kids of Aurora, often labeled as disadvantaged. She wanted to show them that art was a part of life, not something separate. Through DAVA, she provided tools, ideas, and possibilities for these kids to explore. Graham's work with DAVA was challenging but rewarding. She had to chase grants, negotiate with the city, and eventually help the organization purchase its own building. After nearly a decade, she stepped away to focus on her art again. But her legacy at DAVA continues to inspire. Today, Graham's art is being celebrated in a retrospective exhibition. The show brings together pieces from throughout her career, highlighting her evolution as an artist. It's a testament to her lifelong journey of exploration and experimentation.
