Holiday travel is in full swing, and it's not pretty. With so many people on the move, roads and airports are packed. The worst part? A storm is coming, which could make things even harder.
Airports are expected to be the busiest on December 27th. But if you're hitting the road, Saturday, December 20th, was the worst day to travel. Over 10 million people in Southern California alone are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home. Popular spots include San Diego, Las Vegas, Anaheim, and national parks.
Nationally, over 122 million Americans are traveling this holiday season. That's a lot of people! And it's nearly 3% more than last year. So, why the increase? Well, people are just ready to get out and about after a long year.
Some travelers are handling the chaos well. Tim Fox, for example, was at LAX for a flight to Virginia. He said he wasn't stressed and just prepared. He even arrived two hours early, but it turned out to be unnecessary. His flight was on time.
But not everyone is so lucky. The Peterson family from Camarillo missed their flight to Hawaii after getting stuck on the 405 Freeway for hours. They were rebooked on two separate flights the next day. Shane Peterson said it was a bummer and his first missed flight ever.
The 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass is a nightmare right now due to a repaving project. It's reducing lanes between Van Nuys and Westwood, so if you're traveling, be prepared for delays.
And if that's not enough, a rainstorm is expected next week. So, if you're traveling, it's a good idea to leave early. The holidays are supposed to be fun, but this year, it's all about survival.
