A man from Indianapolis has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in a shooting that happened near a fitness center. Keeon Lee, 29, accepted a plea deal that included a gun enhancement, showing he acknowledged his role in the crime. The incident took place on January 9, 2023, around noon, near the Hudson-Campbell Sports & Fitness Center. Jalen "JayBall" Hurd, 24, was found shot multiple times. He was just a block away from City Hall, a place that should have been safe. Police were called to the scene, and it was clear this was a tragic and senseless act of violence. Family members of the victim shared that Hurd and Lee knew each other and that the shooting might have stemmed from an argument over basketball. A woman, who did not want to be named, described Hurd as a "good brother" and expressed her family's confusion and grief. She also mentioned that photos of Hurd's body were shared on social media, adding to their pain. During the court hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Shannon Phillips mentioned that the plea deal was the result of long negotiations and that Lee had taken responsibility for his actions. Defense lawyer James Thiros noted that the sentence was severe and not a light punishment. Lee chose not to speak in court, which surprised the judge, Natalie Bokota. She hesitated, saying she was "a little bit surprised" that he did not use the opportunity to express remorse publicly. The judge accepted the plea deal but admitted she did not know all the details behind the "horrifying crime. " After the sentencing, the prosecutor and defense lawyer had a private discussion with the judge. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of disputes and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions. Police reports revealed that Hurd was shot while near his car, and a basketball with his name on it was found nearby. Security footage showed a white vehicle pulling up, and a man shooting Hurd multiple times. The shooter continued firing even after Hurd was on the ground. Investigators found 30 shell casings at the scene and traced the white vehicle to Lee. Interestingly, Lee's car was impounded the day after the shooting, and he did not attempt to retrieve it. Hurd's family mentioned that he had plans to start a youth sports mentorship program, showing his commitment to giving back to the community. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of conflict resolution and the devastating impact of gun violence.
