A Local Diner’s Last Call
Carmel Valley, California, USAFri Apr 17 2026
A Carmel Valley staple that served breakfast for decades is closing its doors for good. Wagon Wheel, known for its fluffy pancakes and cowboy-style decor, will shut down on May 22 unless a buyer steps in. The diner started as a small food stand in the 1960s, serving farmworkers before growing into a full restaurant in the 1970s. Its owners over the years have always kept the same classic American menu—think eggs Benedict and biscuits with gravy—but the restaurant’s charm came from more than just food.
For years, celebrities like Bill Murray and Clint Eastwood stopped by, adding to its fame. But fame didn’t save it from the struggles many small eateries face today. The owner, Daniel Medina, took over in 2022 after years of working there, but even his effort couldn’t keep up with rising costs and fewer customers since the pandemic. He once worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, pouring everything into the place, yet the numbers still didn’t add up.
What made Wagon Wheel special wasn’t just the food—it was the feeling of stepping into a different time. The cowboy-themed walls and vintage charm made it feel like a time capsule. Medina himself fell in love with the buttermilk pancakes, calling them the best he’d ever tasted. But even great pancakes couldn’t fix the bigger issue: fewer people dining out after COVID.
Still, the community isn’t ready to let go. Customers have flooded social media with memories, from workers in the ‘70s to fans who spotted Doris Day grabbing coffee. Some even reached out with offers to help. Medina admits he’s surprised by the support but isn’t giving up hope yet. Whether someone will buy the diner and keep it alive remains uncertain, but for now, Wagon Wheel’s final days are drawing attention.
